Fallout new vegas ends play time after main quest finished?

i read someplace that the game stops, does not let you play anymore with that character at all, once the final main quest mission is finished. this stopped me from buying it initially (along with reports of hundreds of bugs, several of which i heard were game breaking) i figured that now that its been almost 8 months since its release, the bugs would be patched (and most have been) but i can't find if the game will let you continue playing after the main quest is finished. Does it?
