Has technology had an affect on peoples' names?

I have some neighbors that changed their names from Schweitzeller to Hart. When I ask them why they made the change they mentioned that many times their names have been "too long" for certain electronic forms and applications. They have also had a number of issues with their names being spelled incorrectly and this causing more problems then it migth have historically as they tried to access data or accounts that are all stored electronically. They thought it worth changing their name to something short and simple to avoid all these problems. It got me to thinking: Is this common? Has technology driven name changes in other people? What about childrens' names? Has techonology been a factor for people when they are chosing their child's name? I could find no study about this so I thought I'd ask.
